Energy Resources
Carbon-Hydrogen rich fuel truly isn't that great of long-term energy source for the environmentally conscious society.
Also we're still made of meat, so its kind of like never cleaning out the fish tank if we continue the habit of polluting our environment faster than it can recover.
Upcoming candidates for large scale implementation for energy include; Thorium, Fission, Fusion, Solar, and Synthetic Bio-Fuels.
-Thorium creates few pollutants and is far easier to contain and use than Uranium.
-Fission is is already usable, fusion is developing quickly and has already surpassed the problems of precision and positive net energy barriers seen in the previous century.
-Photovoltaics are increasing in energy efficiency and inversely in material cost, facing very probably developments beyond the normative 26% efficiency seen today within the next few years.
-And synthetic bio-fuels have been in development for some time and have proven not only their viability, but usage in modern everyday heat engines.
Creating strict programs to counsel and audit corporations is one of the most useful tools to making sure the advancement and adaptation of codes and technology is kept current or at a pace satisfactory to development. I cannot stress how important it is to keep a tight supervision over the actions of these large areas of production. It is entirely possible to have growth in infrastructure and technology with the supervision of a legal entity controlling the market.
Once we get these large issues out of the way and create a security, we can focus on the much more intimate and domestic issues of our Nations and communities. Nothing is more heartbreaking than watching a place full of life and history collapse due to inattention.
Where can we expand? Where can we invest and develop? And what rules and laws prevent us from effectively pursuing a stronger future for ourselves?

One method do see is putting on a public display of the possibilities and applications of solar power in a domestic or professional setting. Students could be given various solar cells ranging from the small to large, and encouraged to create interesting applications of a daytime energy source. The most creative, interesting, or provocative creation could be showcased publicly by the students and be used as a means of cementing the ideas of energy costs in our community.
These interactions between a member of the student body and the community as a whole can truly reflect what it means to excel in college. Its more than just soaking up notes, its about engaging the world around you with your own knowledge about what you think needs to be done.

Failed States
A common cause of failure for developing countries is when the mortality rate of a country or society recedes, but the fertility rates do not. The issue is that such an increasing population can cause "Demographic Fatigue". A situation as such means that the institutions in control or social services can no longer support these populations, eventually becoming a failed state. IE.Sudan
Plutocracies that control countries via international trade deals are via proxy can caused failed states. They, by controlling the assets of nations and cultures become the next feudalistic society. The European Union faces similar premises for failure due to the difficulty of using a previous trade agreement to create a new government body of the Europeans States. A mere error in mis-management can cause the whole procession to collapse.
Being vigilant, educated, and prepared for these situations is the only true solution we can have, as there is no panacea for human life.
My best interest is to learn more about the collapse of communities, and follow more information on the interaction of controlling bodies and the public.

In much a way, it is the Alzheimer of politics, nearly untouchable, and nearly impossible to influence. My best words is that college students must excel, in living well. In living ethical lives in a erudite fashion, but yet still assertive to their needs. Join a republican club, democratic, socialist, independent. Just something that is active in community, because that'll make them feel like they're worth a bit more in life, that they are recognized by the community at large to participate in how we do things in the world, and they can even change the ever "sacred" notion of common sense. That is a powerful role, it gives meaning to their place in society, as more than just a census number.
Concerned groups may be political science majors, Economics, Philosophers, and Humanitarians. One could jump start this by merely talking about it, and if you really want to get down to it. It is the same thing. One needs to start or join a group similar to the red cross in how it actively goes out to educate people about natural disasters. Except this time, these disasters are entirely within the frame of human society and not nature itself. In many ways, it is a support group that teaches people how to deal with society on big picture events. This fits entirely into the role of what Universities can do for the community and in extension society as a whole. A means to benefit our advancement and integrity as a society.

Mis-Employment
There is personal satisfaction concerning one's career and employment. But how often is someone satisfied with their job?
Is their job actually meaningful to the advancement of society as a whole, and most importantly, is it important to the individual themselves?
The lazy answer is that someone needs to do that job, otherwise how do we support the jobs that are agreed to be the most enviable in our society? But concerning this "suck it up" attitude, it does not to elevate the satisfaction or moral prerogatives of not only the working class, but anyone alive.
Neither does it address the displacement of jobs and the rebounding emotional catharsis that comes from having one's occupation automated. This is a social issue of a philosophical nature, that will ultimately have a cultural and economic impact that can be devastating if such situations were allowed to accumulate.
Perhaps a large census of how much work is actually done by someone within a day, what exactly is needed, and where it all goes. Because certainly doing something non-stop is not realistic. We must efficiently rationalize our labor for humanitarian benefit. Rather than have someone staple 400 memos and be paid 15$ an hour for something that would've been done by machine in 5 minutes if not for certain "job creation" tactics employed by California. That person could have been doing something specifically human, and maximized their usefulness in the circles of both economic and social benefit.
What are the most common deterrents to human satisfaction in the work environment? What methods do we employ that could be replaced or improved upon? And do any practices in certain fields take away from any other value one may hold? These are just some questions that need to be addressed.

I believe this is almost a "spirit quest" that everyone must carry. I'd say, indulge in philosophy, not some class on western philosophy, but rather a path to know the concerns and the whys of life, and inevitably you'll have to learn how to "philosophy" your way in life. Go to a career fair, watch a documentary, don't be afraid to daydream, have childish visions or let your imagination run wild. Those will eventually be tempered into your springboard into life.
But imagine.. working in life in a job you hate without a good philosophy or sense of ethics for yourself, it is nearly equivalent to committing violence upon one's own person. Commerce should be greasing the wheels to a life, not the other way around.
Addressing the problems may be as simple as asking someone about their future plans. Talking about cool jobs and projects, or even major problems and puzzles within certain fields. Catch someone's interest, and you may have a person that has found a satisfying goal or road of work to pursue with their life.
But of course, it is more than just an affinity for a certain type of work, there is the point of how meaningful it is to the individual, and like it or not. We have individual desires and goals to fulfill. This page by itself "contemporary issues" is an effective measure to helping individual realize applications and meaningful work possibilities. Higher education should be just as so, engaging the individual on a meaningful level that has a a catalytic influence on their life.
