Just as one can be assertive, passive aggressive, and aggressive. There is something I'd like to include in the discussion of behaviour, thoughtfulness. Sure, it goes beyond communication alone, but it is nice to have as a value when interacting with others. Maintaining respect for not only all parties, but the medium itself is important to facilitating communication. Inappropriate behaviours can range from normal passive aggressive comments to aggressive behaviours. Of course how they are inappropriate is of course a matter of context, and assertive approaches are matters that restrain themselves to the issues themselves and nothing beyond to the being itself and infers a judgement.
Do not be lazy with your words, or unspecific. I myself am guilty of being unspecific, I tend to pass the idea of a methodology or interaction rather than the subject itself. It all about giving context than just arriving at a sudden declaration, and one must work on both ends to arrive at any definite conversation.
